What to look for:

It’s possible you may have a water leak if:

  • you can hear the sound of running water or an odd hissing noise near pipes
  • you see running water or wet areas in or around your property
  • the water pressure doesn’t seem as high as it should be
  • you are on a water meter and suspect your bill is higher than it should be – you may be paying for water that is going to waste!

For leaks near the outside of the property, if left untreated, you may start to see a lot of weeds and plants growing near pipework, especially during dry weather. For best results, check our emergency drain service.

Have a burst water main?

Step 1

If the leak is inside your property turn the water off at the internal stop tap. The stop tap is usually near to where the water supply enters the building and is typically under the kitchen sink, or in the bathroom or airing cupboard (in modern homes it is often in the utility room or attached garage).

If the leak is before the stop tap, you may need to go outside and turn the water off at the main stop valve.

Step 2

As soon as the water is turned off call 24/7 Drains on 0121 530 2901. We are here 7 days a week 365 days a year. For burst water pipes we cover West Midlands and Lancashire. We aim to get to properties in our area within 60 minutes. The Cured in Place Pipe process is something which can be applied to a range of pipes and pipe sizes and helps to improve the longevity of a pipe without the need for replacing the entire pipework.

If you need a pipe renovated in this way, then 24/7 Drains can help.

Which drains are you responsible for?

In most cases, it’s your responsibility to maintain the supply pipe. This is the section of the service pipe (the pipe bringing water into your property) from where the water meter and main stop valve are leading into the property itself. Often these are in the pavement or street outside the boundary of your property.

You are also responsible for all the water pipes within your property including the internal stop tap.

Be prepared and call us for drain repair service

It is important that you are aware of where your internal stop tap is in case there is an emergency and you need to turn off the water. As stop taps don’t get used very often it is worth checking it regularly to make sure it is working properly.

You should also make sure you know where your main stop valve is. Although we keep our fingers crossed you will never have to use it
