What to look for:
In the Kitchen
Soap, food waste and grease are the terrors of kitchen drains. It’s tempting to pour hot oil or fat from a frying pan down the sink, but once it reaches the cold drainpipes it can solidify. Over time, combined with food scraps and other items it can seriously clog the pipes. You first start to notice this when the sink doesn’t drain as fast as it used to. Left too long and you have a blocked and overflowing sink!
In the Bathroom
Bath/Shower Drains – While you are having a shower the water should drain away quickly if you are emptying the bath it should only take a few minutes to empty. If you find the water doesn’t run away quickly this can be due to soap and hair clogging the pipes from the bath or the shower trap indicating that you may need to clean the bath/shower drain or have it repaired. Failure to do this as soon as you spot the problem could cause water to overflow onto the bathroom floor, leading to damage to the floor, or rooms below if it’s upstairs.
Bathroom Sinks – When the sink starts draining slowly it’s often a sign that toothpaste, soap, hair and grime has built up constricting the water flow and the drainpipe needs cleaning. Act promptly when you start noticing issues such as:
- – an unpleasant smell
- – water taking longer than usual to drain from your sink
- – water rising in the toilet almost to overflowing after flushing
- – odd gurgling noises from plug holes
Now is the time to act, before it becomes a disaster! Where can I find a reliable plumber near me?
24/7 Drains cover the whole of the West Midlands (see our Areas Covered page) and aim to get to properties in our area within 60 minutes.
What else:
Lost something down the plughole? – Find a plumber near me.
If you accidentally drop something (like a ring or earring) down the plughole, don’t run any more water into the sink. Call 24/7 Drains, we should be able to recover the lost item for you.
Blocked Toilets – A clogged toilet is often caused by attempting to flush baby wipes, sanitary towels, facial tissues, or other items that don’t disintegrate the way toilet paper does. A toilet blockage is often indicated by the water rising to the rim of the toilet when it is flushed. Fortunately, we have a special plumbing tool that fits snugly in the pipe. This tool can cut through any obstruction giving your toilet drain a thorough cleaning at the same time.
Utility rooms, garages, driveways, etc.
Utility rooms, cellars, garages, patios, driveways and even older bathrooms often have a drain to carry away water and prevent flooding. Usually they are have a trap that should be filled with water to prevent odors and sewer gas from escaping. When this becomes blocked water can back-up and start overflowing from the drain. Regular drain cleaning is recommended to prevent major clogs.
Outside drains can also become blocked by leaves and roots, again we can help cut through the roots to clear the drain. Using CCTV we can check for damage to the pipes and advise on repairs should they be cracked or broken.
Act sooner, rather than later
It’s important to act when you suspect that, you have a blocked drain. Overflowing sewage is a health risk (not to mention unpleasant) and damaged drains which are left unrepaired may cause further damage to property in the longer term.
We can fix it

Drain Responsibility
In October 2011 the Government transferred private sewers and lateral drains (the section of the drains which joins a property directly to the main drainage) into the ownership of the statutory water and sewerage companies (nationwide this is mainly Severn Trent Water). This means that individuals are no longer responsible for private sewers that they share with another property owner.
The section of their property’s drain that lies outside the property boundary.
However, the householder still retains the ownership of and responsibility for the drain serving the property and located within the property boundary.
For more information about your drainage responsibility visit the Severn Trent Water website.
Our fully trained engineers are DBS checked (formerly CRB).
